In 1954, the US military began development of the successor for the M59 Armored Personnel Carrier. This vehicle, the M113 APC, was designed for not only mobility and transport, but would also be amphibious and lightweight enough to enable air transport. Eventually, the M113 was the most widely used armored vehicle of the US Army in the Vietnam War. Production for the A2 variant began in 1979, incorporating improvements from lessons learned in Vietnam such as upgrades to the drivetrain and steering system as well as the cooling and suspension setups. In addition, there were optional external fuel tanks and capacity for the installation of smoke dischargers, while the trim vane was enlarged.
