The Republic P-47, produced from 1941 through 1945, was one of the main United States Army Air Force fighters of WWII. The Thunderbolt was effective as a short- to medium-range escort fighter in high altitude air-to-air combat and ground attack in both the European and Pacific theaters. In September 1942, production began on the P-47D "Razorback". Before production switched to the "Bubbletop" P-47, which pilots preferred for its greater visibility, a total of 9,530 "Razorback" P-47D's were produced.
