The M60 is an American second generation main battle tank first designed in the 1950s. It was a mainstay in the US Armed Forces until the 1990s, but remains in service throughout the world today. In order to survive the increasing demands of battlefield operations, it underwent numerous upgrades and improvement over the years. First produced in 1963 at the Warren Army tank plant in Detroit, Michigan, the M60A1 variant has been acknowledged as one of the masterpieces in US armor history. A major improvement found in the A1 version was the M68 105mm main gun, which was mounted in a sleek wedge-shaped monobloc-cast turret. The US Marine Corps opted not to upgrade to the later A3 version because of plans to employ the M1A1 main battle tank. They did, however, install the state-of-the-art reactive armor array on their M60's for improved survivability against shaped-charge missiles and shells, calling the tank an M60A1+.
