The M1 Abrams is a third generation American main battle tank that entered service in 1980 and serves as the main battle tank of the US Army and formerly the US Marine Corps. In 1984, it underwent improvements in armament, protection and electronics which led to the M1A1 variant. Further upgrade of defense capabilities in 1988 led to the M1A1HA, which featured a layer of depleted uranium armor around the front turret. The M1A1HA had a perfect balance of attacking strength, defensive capabilities and maneuverability. Widely deployed during the 1990s, the M1A1HA underwent further upgrades which led to the M1A2. Approved for production in 1990, it featured the latest technology and was first deployed in 2003 alongside M1A1HA as the main battle tank in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
